  1. Main Part.
  2. Listening.

1) Pre-Listening Activities.

  1. a) Teacher: What do you think? Does the culture play an important role in the life of the country? What kinds of art do you know?
  2. b) Teacher: Look at the blackboard. Complete the diagram (Addition 2).

2) While-Listening Activities.

Teacher: Listen to the text (Addition 3):

The Roots of Origin are the Roots of People

The roots of our people go back to the remote epochs of ancient history. Scholars, from different spheres of knowledge-archaeologists, historians, etymologists, philosophers, art critics and anthropologists are diligently searching through eternity for evidence of who we are, where we came from and what became the invigorating base in which the ethnologically expressive tree of the Ukrainian culture took its roots.

Our ancestors perceived the world in accordance with their

ideas about the environment and its elements: the sky and the earth the sun, and the moon, night and day, lightning and thunder, rain, and wind, warmth and cold. Peoples’ relations with nature, their satisfaction for food, clothing, and shelter, their choice of place; to settle, their methods of defending themselves against hostile and dangerous forces, their collaboration in common entertainment, and their rituals, all created the culture.

3) Post-Listening Activities.

Teacher: Answer the questions (in written form):

  1. a) Where do the roots of our people go?
  2. b) What are the scholars from different spheres of knowledge searching for?
  3. c) How do our ancestors perceive the world?
  4. d) What created the culture?
  5. Oral Practice.

Teacher: Dear boys and girls! Your task was to investigate ornaments on your towels, clothes, and shirts. What do these flowers, leaves, birds, signs, stars and zig-zags mean?

Ukrainian embroidery speaks tо us, to every heat and soul in happiness or sorrow. We can compare it with a song.

A song “Oh, Nice Black Eyebrows, Eyes Charmful Hazel” is heard. (Addition 4).

Pupil3: In the boundless scope of culture, special importance is attached to the way of life. Everyday life was a very important part of social life. Everyday was guided by the common habits and norms belonging to а certain way of life. People protected and improved their ethnic world, and their own lives. The daily living environment created that subconscious base which formed the individual and public consciousness of our ancestors.

Pupil4: The poetic images of folk songs and embroidery are closely related. What is pleasing and loved by nations always finds its expression through art. Embroidery is one of the most ancient kind of morals and manners in the culture of Ukrainian folk. With the help of embroidery an ordinary piece of home-spun linen can be turned into a work of art. Ornamented towels and clothes brighten up a rural dwelling.

Pupil5: Ornaments and patterns were compiled with the aim, above all, to show philosophy. They are embroidered in magical, but at the same time brilliant sign system of flowers, birds, crosses, сirсles, squares and zig-zags. The Ukrainian man’s outlook on such philosophical themes as the universe, life on the earth, birth, death, and the comprehension of one’s place and calling is revealed.

Teacher: Thank you very much. Now we invite our grandmother to show us how to embroider. (Grandmother takes needles  and colourful threads and begiпs to embroider different ornaments and patterns. The pupils are standing in circles around the grandmother watching her actions.)

They are singing the song “In the Woods Grow Red Berries”.

  1. Synchronous Translation.

Pupil1: Kalyna (Guelder -Rose) is a tree native to Ukraine. Since time immemorial it is used to be associated with rebirth, the universe, the sun, the moon, and stars. That is why it takes its name from the old name for the sun – Kolo.

Pupil3: The berries of kalyna are red. They are the symbol of blood and immortality. That is why matrimonial towels, and girls’ and even boys’ shirts proliferate with these mighty clasters. A powerful, cosmically creative Ukrainian chain: a drop of blood – woman – birth – Ukraine – rebirth.

The woman and girls are singing a song “Whose Horse is There Detached “(Addition 5).

Pupil5: An oak tree and guelder-rose motifs which are most common on young boys’ shirts in which the symbols of strength and beauty are united. That is extraordinary strength and eternal beauty. The oak is a sacred tree, which prolongs life and kalyna is the tree of birth.

Pupil7: The symbolism of grapes expresses the joy and beauty of the creation of a family. A garden and grapes – these are the field of life on which man is the sower and woman is obliged to cultivate and weave the tree of their family We can see grape motifs on the shirts of men and women and on family towels.

The song “Give Me My Bandura” is heard (Addition 6).

Pupil9: In bygone days, poppy seeds were blessed in Ukraine and sprinkled over people and livestock because it was believed that the poppy had magical powers, which acted as protection against all evil. Moreover people used to believe that a field oiler battle would he covered with poppies in the springtime. In families where someone had perished, girls used to embroider images of poppies on shirts with love and sorrow.

Pupil11: The secret of life is hidden within the lily flower. In legends the lily flower was a symbol of a maiden’s charms, innocence and honour. The embroidered lily flower is an aid to working out the secret of these charms.

Pupil13: Patterns reminiscent of hop leaves are related to youth symbolism. It is invested with the meaning that the development of youthful hop design is a matrimonial symbol. A folk song says that “to climb” or “to twine ”   for a boy, means to be ready for marriage, just as for a girl to get married is to “tie bunches”.

Pupil15: I know this symbol. It is “Berehynya”. It is a very dear symbol for us. It is spread throughout Ukraine. It represents life – creating – mother – nature, and a maternal woman who gives the world a son.

The song “In the Field a Guelder-Rose” (Addition 1).

  1. Dialogue Practice.

Teacher: Ask each other what different symbols on embroidered things  mean, share your feelings and thoughts. Make the dialogues.

Concluding Part.

  1. Marks.
  2. Home task.

Teacher: Make a short report about symbols in Ukrainian

Embroidery.

Group No 1. Speak about guelder-rose in Ukrainian embroidery.

Group No 2. Speak about the oak in Ukrainian embroidery.

  1. Summarizing.

Teacher: Dear boys and girls, dear guests, today in our lesson we touched our hearts to the past and present of our lives in the ornaments of Ukrainian embroidery.

Let’s remember who we are, remember our roots, respect our    nation.

Let’s live in love, peace, and understanding, and you will have

happy future.

A song is heard (Addition 7):

A Red Guelder-rose is weeping in the meadow

And with reason.

Our noble Ukraine is seasoned in sorrow.

But we will raise this red guelder-rose tree

And we will render our noble Ukraine marry,

Hey! Hey!

* * *

Sing With Us!
