Objectives: to extend students` knowledge about schools in different countries; to develop their speech on the topic “School in our life”; to develop listening and reading; to prove how important school is for students; to broaden their outlook.
Equipment: recording and tape-recorder; interactive blackboard
T: Good morning, pupils! How are you? I am glad to see you.
Aim of the lesson
T: Look at the words on the blackboard: by yourself, teachers, you must enter, but, open the door.
- Put them in the correct order.

- Yes, it`s a proverb “Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself.”. So, today we`ll speak about school in our life.

Reading of the text “School of the air”
Big country, small population
Australia is an enormous country, but it has a population of only 20 million. Some families live on farms, hundreds of kilometres from a town or city. Children from these families can’t travel to school every day, so many of them use a special school: the Australian School of the Air.
Schools without classrooms
There are twelve Schools of the Air in Australia and over 1,000 students use them. Students of the school of the Air haven’t got lessons in classrooms with other students. They study at home on their own. The teachers at the School of the Air prepare lessons and send them to the students by post or e-mail. The students have to work on these lessons for five or six hours a day, Monday to Friday. They send their work to the teachers once a week and discuss it by radio or over the Internet. They can also borrow books from the school library. The books arrive by post.
A chance to meet
Once or twice a year, a teacher visits every student at home. The teacher spends a day with the students, helps them with their work and discusses problems. The teacher often has dinner with the family and stays for a night at the student’s house. Teachers and students can also meet at the Sports Carnival. This takes place once a year on playing fields in Alice Springs. Students don’t have to go, but it is a great way for them to do sport together and to make friends.

Blanka Um, that’s a difficult question! I like biology and maths, but my favourite subject is physics.

Nick Hi, my name’s Nick and I go to Abingdon School. It’s a big private school near Oxford, in the middle of England. It’s a very old school-about 700 years old. There are about 800 students here, and about 100 teachers. There are only boys-there aren’t any girls. Some boys live at home and just come to school for lessons, like in a normal school, but I live in the school during the term. I go home for the holidays of course. All the boys wear a uniform-that’s special clothes. The uniform is a dark blue jacket, light blue shirt, grey trousers, black shoes and socks, and a tie. We work very hard but I like my school. I want to do A-levels and then go to university.
Stephanie Hi, I’m Stephanie and I’m at Oakland’s School in London, It’s a state secondary school in the east of London. It’s a mixed school, for boys and girls. There are about 600 students in the school, and some of them come from different countries – there are lots of Pakistani, West Indian, Indian and Chinese students here. There are 89 teachers. I come to school five days a week, Lessons start at 9 and finish at 4. We wear a uniform at my school. I don’t like the uniform – it’s a green T-shirt or sweatshirt and a grey skirt – trousers for the boys, of course. School’s not bad, but I want to leave after my GCSE’s and get a job.
